22My Favourite Artist (Isaac Ilyich Levitan)
Isaac Ilyich Levitan, the great Russian artist, became the first painter of the Russian scenery, who revealed all its beauty. He is a real poet of the Russian countryside. He continued and developed the traditions of painters of the Russian realistic school — Savrasov, Polenov, Serov. Levitan found significant meaning and poetry in what would seem the most everyday subjects.
He is a very individual sort of painter. You can't but appreciate his paintings, because there is something in his landscapes that reflects our own moods.
He deeply felt what he wished to express and his brush transferred these feelings to the canvas. It is interesting to note that a master of landscape, he never introduced figures into it. Though if you look at the Autumn Day in Sokolniki — everything seems to bring out the loneliness of the figure in the centre: the trees losing their leaves, the remote, indifferent sky, the path going off into the distance. But the fact is that it was not Levitan who painted the figure. It was Checkov's brother Nicolai who did it.
His travels over the Volga region influenced Levitan's art, the impression made on him by the great Russian river was unforgettable. For his life and painting he chose Plyoss — a small beautiful town on the Volga. His paintings Evening, Golden Plyoss, After Rain reflect his love for nature.
Last summer I visited Plyoss and saw the places where the great pictures were painted. Many people admire his pictures Deep Waters, Evening Bells, Springtime, The Last Snow and, of course, his famous Golden Autumn. All his paintings are very emotional, lyrical and realistic.
In the closing years of his life Levitan made several journeys abroad to France, Italy and Germany where he painted a number of landscapes, although his best works of the period were devoted to Russia. He was only 40 when he died in 1900.
Levitan's influence on the painters of lyrical landscapes was great. Levitan's feeling for nature, his great love for his native land, his ability to reveal and depict the poetry of the Russian land have won his paintings the love and gratitude of people.

In "Marthe's" I.I.Levitan's picture the early spring, March is represented. We see a house corner, a horse harnessed in sledge, trees, snowdrifts and the dirty, traveled all over road. All would seem the most usual, but the soul is overflowed by pleasure and freshness.
This picture is full of movement: horse who, probably shifts from one foot to the other, trees are a little shaken from an easy breeze. Also in a picture there are a lot of sounds. The poskripyvaniye of floor boards under feet of the person in the house is felt. The melted snow from a roof and when the horse slightly shifts from one foot to the other drips, the easy pokhrustyvaniye is heard. It is possible to feel a wood smell, to be exact needles, I began to smell villages, horses and fresh air.
In this picture there is a motive of expectation. The horse as though waits for the person. The nesting box waits for the owners, starlings. Everything expects arrival of spring and heat. Also it seems when the spring will come, everything will start moving.
In "Marthe's" I.I.Levitan's picture I feel presence of the person. Carelessly opened door, carelessly removed sun blind of the first floor and the left horse harnessed in sledge speaks about it. The footpath conducting in the wood, and the trampled, dirty road also speaks about presence of the person also.
In a picture there is a lot of white color which transfers snow, but in some places it is slightly more dark, and somewhere absolutely gray that it thaws. Green color represented trees. Branches of birches the yellowy-brown. Somewhere it is more dark, and somewhere is lighter. The azure sky without a uniform cloud. Almost violet color represented shadows.
In this picture, though it not autumn, huge amount of yellow paints. So the artist reports a sunlight. The sun it isn't visible, but everything is penetrated by its beams.
Snow in the picture "March" bluish, places yellow, and in a shadow blue and even the violet. Snow is trampled, on it there are a lot of traces. It is covered with a crust, a crust. Snow in a picture porous, I would tell even the porous. In a picture there are a lot of trees. It is visible that on kidney trees only started bulking up. Branches of birches are similar to a web, because they almost transparent. Transparency of branches gives to a picture lightness, even carelessness.
In the right part of a picture the part of the house is represented. It has a yellowish shade from the sun. On a roof of a porch the small group of snow as though bitten by the sun lies.
The road traveled all over, with pools and thawed snow. It dirty also is sanded or straw. The road turns for a snowdrift.
The horse costs at the porch. This simple, rural horse who has got used to work. She expects the owner who either unharnesses it, or will go on it somewhere as it is harnessed in sledge.
This fine picture can be seen in Moscow in the State Tretyakov gallery. When I look at "Marthe's" I.I.Levitan's picture, I feel that the winter comes to an end, and there will come spring soon. Looking at this picture, I want in the wood, on giving. I want that there came summer when warmly and heats the sun rather.

Исаак Левитан / Isaak Levitan
He was born in August 18, 1860. His father was a railway worker. Isaak had two sisters and a brother. His family was very poor. Isaak and his elder brother Avel were fond of drawing and that is why they entered Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
Unfortunately in 1875 Isaak`s mother died and two years later his father got ill and soon died, too. The children began to live by themselves without parents. It was very hard, because they were too young to earn money but the boys continued their studying.
Isaak liked to draw landscapes. He got a silver medal for his oil paints studying in 1877.
Alexey Savrasov, the most popular artist of that time, became Isaak`s tutor.
The teachers knew about the situation in the boy`s family and tried to help him. They supported him and often gave him food and money.
In 1879 his work «the View of Simonov Monastery» was displaced in the 10th students` exhibition. The teachers paid much attention to this work. They enlisted the grant from the general-governor of Moscow of V.A. Dolgoruky. He was given a scholarship.
One of the best Levitan`s friends was Anton Chekhov, a very famous Russian writer. They sent many letters to each other. Isaak Levitan became a prototype of many Chekhov`s characters. For example, a painter in Chekhov`s story «The Butterfly». It described Levintan`s love to S. Kuvshinnikova, who was also an artist.
I think that the best work of Levitan is «March». It is one of the most popular paintings in Tretyakov Gallery. We can see bright spring morning in the picture. And we can seea brown horse and an old house in the middle of the landscape. But we can feel something strange, which makes us happier. We feel how nature is waking up after a long deep dream. It is the main idea of this picture. Levitan tries to show us the most beautiful moment in the nature`s life, the time when the nature becomes alive again. Isaak produced this picture in bright colors. He tried to use thin brushes because he wanted to show us the beauty of snow. The snow is not white. It has many shades: yellow, green, red and so on. Most people like this painting and can stand in front of it for many hours admiring its beauty.
Another beautiful canvas of Levitan is «The golden Plyos». It has peaceful and harmonic coloring. It depicts the scenery of the town Plyos on the Volga River. We can see blue mountains on the background and the forest, which goes down to the river bank. There is a little house with a red roof and a high belfry near the river bank. This picture gives the feeling ofpeace and calmness.
Levitan spent three summers in Plyos and he created two hundred works. And after that many artists went to Plyos. They hoped to find inspiration there and to paint such beautiful pictures as Levitan had created.
I think that «The golden Plyos » is one of the most exciting and beautiful paintings of Levitan.
